A WEEKLY WORD FROM THE REV.Let me this week bear testimony of my two recent public appearances, continuing my mission to encourage spiritual non-entities and bog standard Christians to reach unto the heights of megatudinous anointment. The first is an inspiring example of the Lord's glorious triumph over the powers of darkness. And the second is too, but you have to really want to see it. 1. Greenbelt At this year's Greenbelt I was the main attraction (to all right thinking people) of the Ship of Fools Ned Flanders show. The main idea of the show was to promote My Ministry Manual (at least so far as I was concerned).
It is unspeakable joy for me to reflect how many lives were changed that weekend, and how many copies of the book were shifted. 2. Pilgrim Pathways Literature Festival Unspeakable joy of a very very different kind awaited me at this major event of the literary firmament, organised by the Leeds SPCK bookshop. For though we were few in number, we were many in a very real sense. For are we not told, where two or three are gathered together, that is enough to take up the offering? It's certainly enough for me. The four silver-haired warriors of the faith and veterans of the local Tuesday Ladies' meeting, plus one grandson, were proof, if proof were need be, that it is not mere numbers that count in the eyes of the lord, but something else, something very different. The elderly have a commitment to the work that is sadly lacking in our generation. One of the ladies was proud to declare that she would never miss such an occasion as she always supported everything that SPCK did, no matter how controversial or misguided, and I respect that. What a blessed half hour indeed we shared together. I could well have stretched it out to many times as long, but by the time we finished, I'm sure we all felt as if I already had, so there was no need. Which was nice.
